Growing up, my skin was mostly clear. I only really had spots every few months. However, from 16 onwards, everything changed...
I was 16 years old when I first developed acne. My period came along with a side of acne.
I had tiny, shiny spots all over my face. They were the same colour as my skin, no little whiteheads or blackheads, so they did not stand out too much. Because of the time it came up it was more than likely hormonal acne. The acne that had come up took just under 2 weeks to clear, all by itself.
This time my acne was exactly the same as it was in September, only this time it took a around a week to clear.
This time it was caused by the hormones in the implant I had put in in October. I figured this out because it also caused me to gain weight and get a tiny amount of acne on my upper arms, back and chest, amongst other symptoms- All in October/ November.
The body acne wasn’t noticeable unless I got close to a mirror in a low cut or, sleeveless top. I only had around 10 spots at any given time, spread out between my chest, arms and legs.
I was conflicted, do I remove the implant that doctors recommended for my hormonal issues? Or, do I keep it and possibly have acne for however long? Luckily it had cleared, in just under a week, before I had made my decision.
This acne appears mostly on my chin but, also on jawline too sometimes. This small patch first appeared in around 2018. It leaves darker marks but, this has never really bothered me as it’s only a small patch on the underside of my chin.
How I treated the acne:
Before you look at my skincare routine, I think it’s important to mention my skin type. I have combination skin, with an oily T-zone and the rest of my face is normal. This way, you can use my routine, adding or changing steps based on your skin concerns or, skin type. If you’re not sure what your skin type is, you can find out here.
- Cleanser- (This time around I have been using my new gentle cleanser that I have been trying out before adding to this site)
- A clay mask- with water and a few drops of oil. 5 minutes. Apple cider vinegar worked quicker for me even though some Dermatologists advise against using it on your skin. I would use Apple cider vinegar mixed with water in a 50:50 ratio. Clay masks should go over your neck (other areas if needed) and stay on for up to 15-20 minutes.
- Lots of Moisturiser (with SPF). Clay masks can be drying so I always use a hydrating moisturiser. The moisturiser I use for the day time will have SPF, if it’s night time I will use a heavier moisturiser.
- Oil Serum- (optional, if I do use it it has SPF so I will use a moisturiser underneath that does not have SPF)
I did this clay mask routine twice a week. The spots would normally clear up a day or two after the masks. Apart from my chin, they generally do not reappear apart from one or two whiteheads every few months.
Fast forward to the end of June 2020. I listened to the advice of a medically qualified YouTube expert (who will not be named as they are really good). They suggested something that I had never done before, not going to discuss what it was as I don’t want anyone to repeat and get the same results. It including using an ingredient on my face that I had used many times before but never this way...
My skin looked amazing! But, two day later I had acne from my cheekbones downwards. (Describe acne). I’d never had acne like this before so I was really upset. I didn’t want to go anywhere at all.
I managed to clear it up in a week. But, after seeing how well it worked for everyone else, I decided to try the medical expert’s advice again. This time following it exactly as they demonstrated in the video. Pausing the video as you do with YouTube tutorials to follow each step. It happened again, this time it was the next day but worse.
I decided to see if my trusty friend, clay masks could work their usual magic. I had to do around 6 (every 2-3 days for 2 weeks) to get a drastic reduction. On some of those clay mask days, I would just apply clay masks to my problem areas. They did come back when I stopped doing clay masks. Unfortunately, I’m not good with routines when it comes to regular clay masks, daily supplements, anything important. I always end up forgetting something...
Eventually, more spots came up. Luckily, for me it was only two small patches and near to the acne I had left on my cheeks from before. Each of the two patches were around the size of a £2 coin. I started doing the clay masks again, not often though.
The leftover acne was extremely stubborn so I’m using 0.1% differin gel in the night time to clear the rest. It’s now day 3 and I have about 10 spots altogether. My acne scars on my cheek are clearing. The hormonal acne on my chin is clearing up too. So once I stop using adapelene on my face in a few days, I will continue to use it on my chin.
